PAK live vs. PAK classic

In this short overview a few changes are explained when coming from PAK classic and introducing PAK live. PAK classic refers here to the case where you would have to upgrade your firmware version with every release of the PAK software. The display of the PAK MKII would show "Idle". With PAK live the display would show "Live" indicating that the PAK MKII operates in live mode.

Components vs. Overall System

  • With PAK classic the PAK software, the PAK MKII and the corresponding firmware would operate as an overall system.
  • With PAK live there are now multiple components creating a system where every component has its own properties and purposes. It is possible to update these components individually. Especially, you can remain on a certain version of the PAK live firmware on your PAK MKII and update the PAK software for new features.

Measuring with a PAK MKII

  • With PAK classic it is necessary to initialize your PAK MKII to make it ready for measuring before every start of a measurement.
  • With PAK live the PAK MKII is ready to measure after booting. Starting at this moment there is a stream of data which can be simply recorded with PAK 6.x (or other applications like PAK capture, PAK passby or PAK matrix).

Settings with PAK live and PAK 6.x live

  • By operating PAK live all settings are saved on the PAK MKII. After restarting the PAK MKII the last used settings will be used.
  • Within PAK 6.x live it is possible to save settings in a PAK live Measurement Definition. An internal comparing process collates the stored settings from your loaded local file with the recent settings coming from the connected PAK MKII. If there is a mismatch the user will be prompted to decide if he wants to push the loaded settings onto the device or pull the recent settings into the loaded setting. Please refer to Loading a PAK live Measurement Definition.

Channels

  • With PAK live all modules are active meaning they produce and stream data. If you "activate" a channel within PAK 6.x live, PAK scope or PAK capture the data of these channels would be able to be recorded. As a consequence, the workload of a system refers not to the "activated" channels but the built in modules as well as the set sampling rate.
  • Working with PAK 6.x live requires a fully position-oriented workflow, there are no more channel numbers. However, the PAK live Measurement definition sorts the channels as they are built in the PAK MKII.

Channel Table vs. Preconditioning

When working with the PAK live measurement definition you will see that there is a channel table which lists all settings which will be set on the PAK MKII. The preconditioning part allows you to make adjustments which will be computed within the PAK software on your computer.

Channel Groups instead of Sampling Groups

With PAK 6.x live you will not be able to define sampling groups as you would do it with PAK classic. Instead, channel groups will be automatically created corresponding to the sampling rate which is configured on each MKII. Additionally, some modules (e.g. THM, ALI) as well as digital busses (CAN, FLX) are within own channel groups. If you have two or more PAK MKII's which all are operating with the same sampling rate you would need to ensure active synchronization for measuring.
